One of the greater challenges in freelance photography is getting information on what can/cannot be photographed. Additionally, depending on the type of shoot, additional registrations are usually required prior to a trip. This page attempts to answer some of these questions and will be updated as new links are found. If other photographers wish to add their links, please feel free to email me. Your contributions will be both acknowledged and listed out either within the applicable reference category.
Catacomb photography is strictly prohibited although reproductions can be purchased from the photographic archive at the Pontifical Commission

JAPAN
I have been unable to find specific guidelines at this time but the general consensus appears to be an open mindedness toward photographers. However, erring on the side of caution and common sense is always helpful when one is unsure – especially around military installations or police headquarters. And ask permission first when photographing strangers. It not only shows a sense of manners but it may even open up other possibilities. PHOTO PERMITS
Scott Kelby (editor and publisher of Photoshop User Magazine) has an interesting blog post on obtaining permits in general.
PhotoPermit.org's reference page has links to changing regulations, permit requirements and other useful FYI articles on what to do with an overzealous security guard.
Photography is not allowed in the Cathedral. However, the Muniments Room has photos of a number of commonly requested items that can be requested. Reproduction fees are payable in addition to the price of purchasing the prints.
For example, if used in a book, the fee will depend on the print run type. A scholarly book run (up to 2,000 copies) the current fee for B&W usage is £5.50per image and £11.75 per color image (valid as of Fall, 2007). The rates will go up when the run exceeds 2,000 copies. The credit line required for the prints used is “Copyright: Dean and Chapter of Westminster".
Permission is needed for commercial photography. It is also recommended that the photographer know the specific site he/she will be working in as this information is required on the application. Applications must be submitted no less than three days before the planned shoot and appointments are set for 4 hours at a time. Cost per shoot at least £280 (valid as of Fall, 2007)

Note: per the chairman in September, 2007 - commercial photography as a whole, is strongly discouraged with exceptions made for high level projects such as those from the BBC.
