Once upon a time, I decided I was going to become a famous artist. However, that stint quickly ended when my kindergarten teacher stopped me from painting houses upside down. She made some kind of statement about it not making sense...
I dropped artistic endeavors until my late twenties when I discovered photography. Like most people, I started in color and then started mixing in black and white mediums. My subject work can encompass landscapes, artistic venues and more currently, a cemetery book project although I won't be leaving the landscape category anytime soon - there are too many places of beauty that must be shared with others. Currently, my newest works showcase some of the seasonal sights on local Pacific NW bike trails - see PNW Seasons page.
Film/Equipment:
I now only use digital for my work although if I do use film, I'll go with Ilford 3200 high-speed, high-grain for poor weather compositions and Tmax 100-200 speed for venues requiring greater shadow definition and finer grain resolution.
Over the years I've used various cameras ranging from the Kodak Disc (remember that one?) to a Canon Rebel EOS, Canon Powershot digital and most recently, a Fuji FinePix 40fd for low light shots.
Photos:
Print: My format of choice for landscapes is a mounted 8x12 burned with an edge on 11x14 paper allowing for white bordering while erasing the need for matting. A 16x20 size (or greater) is favored for the artistic shots to enhance the grain and overall dreamy aspect of the final reprint.
Digital: As long as my cameras can produce photos that print high quality 8x12 photos, I'm happy. And yes, I feel free to digitally enhance when the need arises.
Sales: Due to the current workload generated by my research and a growing emphasis on publishing my freelance writing, I am only able to pursue commercial photo sales on a quarter-time basis. However, please feel free to contact me to discuss prices if a particular shot catches your attention.
The Writing:
Travel writing on a quirky level. While my blog postings reflect a more serious turn in research, these travel articles are for fun and can be found here. And as a special note, I am currently building a separate page dedicated to information and links on photographic permissions in the U.S., and around the world. That page is slated for completion late Summer, 2008 and can be found here.
